| PANETICS TRILOGY | | Non-members price for set: $35.00 | Members price for set: $26.25 | Single volume non-members: $15.00 | Single volume members: $11.25 | | Volume I. LESS SUFFERING FOR EVERYBODY, International Society of Panetics, 1993. | | In the summer of 1988, Siu first put forward the proposition that reducing or ameliorating human-induced suffering should become an over-riding objective in the modern world. "Indeed," he writes in this volume, "the bulk of current human suffering is no longer God-given, but man-made. The amount of pain, anguish, and misery that is humanly mediated far exceeds that impinging from natural causes." He recites the history of this increase. In this book, he calls for an organized effort to reduce this human-inflicted suffering. He advances the concept of the "dukkha," a measure of the intensity of suffering by people over time. | | | | Volume II. PANETICS AND THE DUKKHA; AN INTEGRATED STUDY OF THE INFLICTION OF SUFFERING,International Society for Panetics, 1993. | | This volume surveys what "panetics" as a discipline might come to embrace at a minimum. It digests world literature on the subject of human suffering for those who might wish to probe more deeply. The survey begins in 8000 BC and comes up to the present. It looks at trends, then presents some contemporary case studies, many of them conducted by members of ISP. It analyzes the process of inflicting suffering and concludes by describing the "humane right" to which the peoples of the world are entitled. | | | | Volume III. SEEDS OF REFLECTION; PANETIC WORD CLUSTERS, International Society for Panetics, 1993. | | A dictionary of terms relevant to any analysis of the causes and consequences of human suffering. Siu intended it first as a thesaurus of terms relevant to panetic analysis and research. Secondly, as an attempt to sharpen the semantics of the field by focusing upon clearer definitions of terms that might be employed in panetic research and discussion. | | | | HARMONY TRILOGY | | | | | | | | | | Non-members price for set: $35.00 | Members price for set: $26.25 | Single volume non-members: $15.00 | Single volume members: $11.25 | | Volume I. UNIFYING THEORY OF THE HUMAN ORGANISM AND BEHAVIOR, International Society for Panetics, 1999. | | The search for ways to bridge the gap between C.P. Snow's "Two Cultures" is an exploration that challenges leading humanists and ethicists and religionists on the one hand and scientists on the other. Most recently, the entomologist and sociobiologist, E.O. Wilson has made his owe foray in Consilience. Here is Ralph Siu's expedition into the same territory. He offers a unified scheme to do the following:(1)Integrate the "physical," "chemical," "animate," and "human" manifestations into a single compatible vocabulary. (2) Propose theoretical elements and standard rules to combine these manifestations into successively larger compositional structures and expressions. (3) Define a coherent set of relationships for all human phenomena and dynamics, both physical and mental. (4) Elucidate a range of heretofore unexplained observations ranging from music and management to pain and schizophrenia. (4) Predict human conduct. (5) Provide the basis for cross-talk between natural scientists, social scientists, humanists, and society's leaders. | | | | Volume II. CHEERFULNESS, International Society for Panetics, 1999. | | Cheerfulness, Siu argues, is probably the closest we can come to the perfect state of well being. Yet, he says, in his search through the monumental collections of the Library of Congress, he could not find cheerfulness as the subject of a single serious volume. Neither was it identified by the editors of the Great Books as one of the principal 102 ideas that shaped western culture. So he has sought to correct this omission with this volume. "Do we not hear the faint echoes of Democritus in Greece urging that cheerfulness be the prime goal of living?, " he asks. "And smiling Chaung-tzu in China nodding in hearty agreement? May we not sum up much of the teaching of these laughing philosophers of the fourth century BC in the statement: Reasonableness is one of the surest ways to social harmony and cheerfulness is one of the surest signs of having arrived?" | | | | Volume III. SHAPING ONE'S OWN LIFE; A SOCRATIC ANTHOLOGY OF PERENNIAL QUESTIONS, International Society for Panetics, 1999. | | If one harbored any doubts about the breadth of Siu's scholarship in authoring these four trilogies, this volume should put them at rest. Here, as a by-product of his labors, a collection of 3,333 quotations from cultures around the world over the last 6000 years. They are framed as questions with no explicit answers so that one can find one's own way. "Such a negative approach to enlightenment," Siu writes, "follows the tradition of the Taoist and Zen sages, Yoga gurus, Christian and Islamic mystics, Socrates and kindred teachersin contrast to the positive directions in what-to-believe catechisms and what-to-do manuals. He suggests that the best use of the book is in an unhurried, unpressured, and free-ranging reflection, either in solitary or in a small group without a leader. | | | | | | | | | | | | SOURCEBOOK | | Non-Members Price: $15.00 | Members Price: $11.25 | | | | UNDERSTANDING AND MINIMIZING THE INFLICTION OF SUFFERING; AN INTEGRATED DISCIPLINE CALLED PANETICS, The International Society for Panetics, May 1999. | | Designed as both a panetic encyclopedia and textbook, this volume was assembled by Siu for use by those who either wish to teach Panetics as a discipline, or who want to look over a summary of research and proposals conducted by paneticists. It is comprehensive in its coverage of work conducted during the decade of the 1990s. | | | | Non-Members Price: $12.95 | Members Price: $9.75 | | | | The Land of Keikitran and Eleevan by R. G. H. Siu, AZ, Hats Off Books, November 2001. | | This newly discovered book by Ralph G.H. Siu was written in 1972. It might be described as a utopia in the vein of Samuel Butler's "Erewhon." It clearly reflects Siu's own perception of the shortcomings in western culture and anticipates much of his later writing. | | | | OUT OF ASSA: HEART OF THE CONGO: Medical Adventures in Central Africa by Glenn W. Geelhoed, MD, Three Hawks Publishing, LC, Alexandria, Virginia; April 2000. | | Softbound: $15.95 | | | | | ISP Members who have known the Society's Secretary, Glenn Geelhoed, for some time know that he keeps detailed diaries of his many "medical adventures" around the world and shares them weekly with everyone in his e-mail address book. As Professor Kurt Johnson, Glenn's friend and publisher, notes in the Preface to OUT OF ASSA, " [Glenn] has a high speed motor running inside of him." Indeed, he has. If you read this account of Glenn's work in the most remote region of Central Africa, you will quickly understand why so many young medical students disillusioned by "corporate medicine" and thirsting for ways to put the high ideals that attracted them to a career in medicinestrive to accompany Glenn on his forays. As Professor of International Medical Education at the George Washington University, he receives many such requests. Now let it be understood that Glenn's main objective on these expeditions is to minister to people suffering from debilitating health problems and the ravages of disease and who have no way to pay for medical help. However, OUT OF ASSA says little about these professional dimensions of his adventures in Central Africa. Avocationally, Glenn is a naturalist and anthropologist and a true adventurer. In consequence, this is a diary of his encounters with people and animals (charging elephants, particularly) and geography and history. And a rollicking good account it is, too. | | |
